Introdução: Pronação é uma técnica baseada em posicionar o paciente em decúbito ventral em caso de síndrome do desconforto respiratório agudo, facilitando a troca gasosa no pulmão, e diminuindo a tensão pulmonar. Ela está sendo amplamente usada no tratamento e o causando bom prognóstico de pacientes internados com COVID-19. Objetivos: Compreender a importância do manejo correto de pacientes diagnosticados com COVID-19 e os benefícios na adoção da posição prona. Material e métodos: Foi realizada uma revisão de literatura integrativa usando os bancos de dados MSD manuais e Pubmed, aplicando os descritores “COVID-19”; “SARS-CoV-2” e “Síndrome respiratória aguda grave”. Usou-se como critério de inclusão os artigos em inglês e português que estivessem no período entre os anos de 2015 a 2021. Resultados: A pronação causa um aumento da depuração secretora mucociliar, por desobstrução das vias aéreas, facilitando assim a ventilação e trocas gasosas. Ela também é responsável pelo recrutamento posterior de áreas com atelectasia, aumento do volume pulmonar nessas áreas, uma vez que ocorreu um colapso do tecido pulmonar ocasionando quadros de insuficiência respiratória e dispneia. Além disso, é importante para aprimorar a relação ventilação/perfusão, sendo a adequação entre a ventilação alveolar e a perfusão, constituindo benefícios para as trocas gasosas que ocorrem nos alvéolos, diminuindo o espaço morto que pode ser encontrado em pacientes com algum distúrbio respiratório. Conclusão: A utilização da técnica de pronação tem se apresentado bastante eficiente e importante nos pacientes que apresentam síndrome do desconforto agudo devido ao COVID-19, devido ao fato dela aliviar os sintomas respiratórios. Além da síndrome do desconforto agudo poder se desenvolver em até 40% dos pacientes internados.
