Introdução: Um grande número de compostos ativos extraídos diretamente de plantas possuem efeitos medicinais em diferentes patologias, atuando como tratamento adjuvante ou principal dependendo da enfermidade. Segundo a OMS, seu uso é benéfico quando utilizado corretamente, além de ser mais acessível. A diabetes mellitus tipo 2 está entre as 10 principais causas de morte no Ocidente, e métodos eficientes para seu manejo podem ajudar a reduzir este índice. Objetivo: Descrever as principais plantas utilizadas no manejo da glicemia em pacientes com diabetes mellitus tipo 2 e sua efetividade. Material e Métodos: Pesquisa bibliográfica qualitativa nos portais SciELO e Google Acadêmico com artigos sobre o tema nos últimos 10 anos. Um total de 11 artigos foram selecionados após aplicação dos critérios de inclusão e exclusão. Resultados: Dentre as plantas mais utilizadas encontram-se a Allium sativum (Com efeito hipoglicemiante e diurético), Bauhinia forficata L. (Age diminuindo a absorção de glicose pelo organismo), Annona muricata (Ação hipoglicemiante por aumento dos níveis de insulina) e Syzygium jambolanum (Diminui o metabolismo da neoglicogênese). A redução dos níveis glicêmicos por ação fitoterápica é significativa em estudos controlados. A maior parte dos participantes obtém as plantas por meio do cultivo próprio, seguido da compra em mercados/raizeiros locais. O consumo é feito majoritariamente através de misturas infusivas e maceração. Efeitos adversos foram observados em estudos qualitativos onde participantes relataram consumo excessivo. As complicações assemelham-se aos sintomas da hipoglicemia. Conclusão: Os efeitos hipoglicemiantes de diferentes plantas são identificados na maior parte dos estudos analisados. O conhecimento empírico popular de tais efeitos é a maior fonte pela qual os participantes decidiram fazer uso destas. A fitoterapia apresenta-se como uma alternativa terapêutica ou tratamento adjuvante em casos de diabetes mellitus do tipo 2 na realidade sul-americana.
