Introdução: A doença de Alzheimer é uma proteopatia, ou seja, é caracterizada por anomalias no enovelamento de proteínas. Ela é uma doença neurodegenerativa, progressiva e irreversível, sem cura nem métodos preventivos e que apresenta como uma das suas causas um fator bioquímico. Objetivo: O resumo visa buscar na literatura o entendimento sobre como ocorre a formação das placas senis, ou seja, a deposição do peptídeo beta-amilóide no cérebro, sendo ela uma das prováveis causas da doença. Material e métodos: Os artigos científicos pesquisados foram encontrados na base de dados Scielo, incluindo estudos com o uso de neurônios de camundongos transgênicos da Faculdade Médica da Universidade de Lund, na Suécia. Resultados: Para estudar a doença de Alzheimer, é importante compreender como ocorre o fator primordial da patogênese: como a proteína beta-amilóide se arranja nos depósitos extracelulares no cérebro. Essa compreensão pode resultar em novas terapias e no desenvolvimento de um novo fármaco contra a doença. Nas análises bioquímicas, o estudo também encontrou autores que defendem a tese das placas senis poderem ser encontradas em cérebros de pessoas idosas sadias como consequência do processo natural do envelhecimento, sendo isso uma possível fase assintomática da doença. No entanto, falta uma quantidade maior de estudos científicos para uma melhor veracidade do assunto. Conclusão: Embora existam estudos científicos sobre esse fator bioquímico, ainda não se pode ter uma certeza, o que demonstra a necessidade de análises científicas e maiores investimentos nessa área de pesquisa para o alcance de resultados mais eficazes e, consequentemente, a possibilidade de prevenção e de tratamentos que viabilizem a cura.
