Introdução: A enfermagem forense atua nas avaliações e coletas de vestígios, em caso de violências sofridas pelos pacientes fora/dentro do contexto hospitalar, auxiliando na detecção da causa mortis, contribuindo assim, com a epidemiologia e vigilâncias em saúde. Diante desse contexto, questiona-se: Qual a contribuição da enfermagem forense para a investigação do óbito? Objetivo: Descrever a atribuição da enfermagem forense, enquanto caráter investigativo e compreender sobre as evidências científicas frente à temática. Material e métodos: Trata-se uma revisão de literatura, realizada no período de junho a agosto de 2020. Foram utilizadas publicações do Ministério da Saúde/OMS e artigos publicados nos últimos 10 anos, disponibilizados nas bases de dados SciELO, LILACS E BDENF. Resultados: Dos artigos encontrados, grande parte explanou sobre a necessidade de um correto preenchimento das declarações de óbitos e lacunas relacionadas a atuação do enfermeiro forense, visto que essa condição impacta diretamente nos dados de mortalidade e, consequentemente, nas causas de óbitos mal definidas. Fica evidente, a necessidade de atuação do enfermeiro forense nesse contexto, que não deve ser restrita somente em âmbito de assistência direta, mas sim, deve-se direcioná-lo à participação investigativa e multidisciplinar que o compete. Tal prática é embasada para a elucidação de causas mórtis, conforme Resolução 556/2017 do COFEN. Conclusão: Embora a atuação brasileira seja bastante restrita, o enfermeiro forense detém de capacidades ímpares, se mostrando apto a emitir pareceres, laudos e, também, atuar no campo epidemiológico e nas elucidações de diversos óbitos. Evidenciou-se a necessidade de novos estudos que sustentem tal prática, para que assim, possa ampliar-se, também, os campos de atuações.
