Ozônio é um gás constituído por três átomos de oxigênio, instável, incolor e que apresenta um cheiro característico quando submetido a descargas elétricas. Está contido em sua grande maioria na camada atmosfera, especificamente na estratosfera. Apresenta grande importância para o equilíbrio biológico da Terra pois, absorve os raios ultravioletas advindos do sol. Foi utilizado na época da Primeira Guerra Mundial no tratamento de gangrena gasosa que após o sucesso terapêutico foi instituído gradativamente o uso do tratamento de doenças com o ozônio medicinal. O trabalho em questão foi realizado com o intuito de identificar os mecanismos de ação e sua aplicação dentro da Medicina Veterinária com enfoque na área de pequenos animais apresentando estudos de casos e revisões bibliográficas dentro desta temática. Como resultados tivemos afirmado mediante a esses de que a utilização da ozonioterapia é útil no tratamento de diversas comorbidades, além de apresentar a vantagem de ser uma terapia coadjuvante de baixo custo e de fácil aplicação. A obtenção deste para fins medicinais é por meio de geradores elétricos usufruindo de oxigênio e ozônio puros. Trata-se de uma terapia complementar em ascensão levando em consideração o potencial desta em exercer atividades antimicrobiana, antiálgica, anti-inflamatória, imunorreguladoras, defesas antioxidantes e alterações epigenéticas. Devido alguns mecanismos de ação do ozônio ainda não serem devidamente esclarecidos, seja em forma local ou sistêmica, maiores estudos e aprofundamento dentro da área ainda se faz necessário. Na literatura iremos encontrar vários protocolos sobre o uso medicinal do ozônio. Entretanto, a concentração irá variar amplamente de acordo com cada autor.
