Introdução: O uso da A. muricata, na medicina tradicional, muitas vezes está relacionado ao uso de suas folhas, frutos e raízes, sob a forma de chá para tratamento de doenças. Muitos compostos bioativos e fitoquímicos são encontrados na graviola, estudos têm mostrado ação hipotensiva, antiespasmódica, vasodilatadora, relaxante do músculo estomacal e atividade citotóxica contra células cancerígenas a partir dos extratos das folhas e troncos. Objetivo: Explorar o potencial da graviola no tratamento de doenças através de uma revisão de literatura. Material e métodos: Efetuou-se busca em artigos de periódicos indexados nas bases de dados BVS, SciELO e PubMed, inglês e português, publicados nos últimos dez anos. Resultados: Pesquisas revelam que a graviola possui uma grande concentração de compostos, entre eles os compostos fenólicos, incluindo taninos e flavonoides que têm seus usos terapêuticos como agentes anti-inflamatórios, antifúngicos, antioxidantes e ainda, propriedades cicatrizantes. A. muricata apresentou atividade citotóxica em testes com animais sobre células tumorais de diversos tipos de câncer, demonstrando um efeito citotóxico 10.000 vezes maior que a adriamicina, usada como fármaco de referência. Outro estudo realizado demonstra que a anonacina promove a morte de neurônios dopaminérgicos, por diminuição da produção de energia, sendo também ressaltado seu possível papel na etiologia de algumas formas do Mal de Parkinson atípico de Guadalupe. Conclusão: Foi comprovado a eficácia da planta em tratamentos de doenças musculares, estomacais, cancerígena e outras. Além de que o tratamento fitoterápico constitui uma importante alternativa no controle de doenças, considerando o baixo custo, facilidade de incorporação aos serviços públicos de saúde, fácil manuseio, larga disponibilidade de matéria-prima e aceitação popular.
